24.com mobile applications

News24 j2me application - now available

The News24 j2me application is finally out of beta and now available for download.

Users can read the latest news, sport, finance, motoring and entertainment stories on their java phones , access 24.com mobile services (such as Email, Weather, Astro, Lotto, TV Guide etc) and submit news photos to News24.

Developing j2me applications are often more complex than other apps due to the vast number of devices, screen sizes and various standards that need to be catered for. We've therefore targeted the News24 app at a set of java devices that most regularly visit 24.com's mobile website m.24.com.  These include:

Nokia E71, N70, N73, N79, N80, N95, N95 8GB,  6110 Navigator, 6300, 6500
Samsung D900i, S8000, SGH-i900
Sony Ericsson c902 , k550i, p1i, w850i, w890i

The application will work on all java devices supporting MIDP 2.0 (and above) and CLDC 1.1 (and above) excluding touch devices (such as the Nokia 5800) and Blackberry. Look out for a custom built News24 Blackberry app in the next few months.

To download the app - go to http://bit.ly/24j2me on your mobile browser. It will also soon be available in the Ovi Store and Getjar app store.

A smaller version of the app is also available for devices with small screen sizes – such as the Motorolla v360. This version offers quick access to all our news feeds but doesn’t display images or have the submit news photos to News24 functionality.

Please send any comments, suggestions and feedback to&nb sp;j2me@sa.24.com

Send breaking news photos via a News24 mobile apps

The UGC (user generated content) component that we’ve been working on for our mobile apps allowing users to easily submit news photos directly from their News24 mobile application (iPhone, Android or j2me) has now been completed.

Up to now the News24 news desk has only been receiving user submitted news photos by e-mail. Now by incorporating this functionality into our mobile apps we hope to start seeing our app users also becoming ‘citizen journalists’ - always ready to snap photos of breaking news on their phones and submitting it directly to News24 for publishing.

Photos can be submitted in a few simple steps via the News24 iPhone, Android and j2me applications and will also be included in our upcoming Blackberry and Windows Mobile applications.

iPhone push notifications

The latest version of the News24 iPhone app went live this past weekend. In addition to the UGC functionality, the update also includes push notifications.

When the (updated) app is opened for the first time, you will be notified that the News24 app now supports Push Notifications and can choose whether to subscribe to the service or not.

Currently the service allows users to receive alerts when a new top story appears in the following categories: News24, Fin24, Wheels24, Sport24 and Channel24. These preferences can adjusted at any time simply by clicking on Settings under the More Tab and scrolling down to the Push Notifications section.

We’ve worked hard to get a good balance between ‘useful’ and ‘non-intrusive’ for this service so please send us your feedback once you’ve tried it out for a while. Ultimately our users’ feedback will determine which direction we take for news alerts in future updates.
